In a significant stride towards enhancing regional connectivity, Nepal has completed the track opening of the Koshi Highway, a 390-kilometer north-south corridor linking the Indian border at Biratnagar to the Chinese border at Kimathanka. This development marks a pivotal moment in Nepal’s infrastructure landscape, aiming to facilitate trade, tourism, and socio-economic integration across its diverse terrains.
The highway traverses through the Terai, Hill, and Mountain regions, encompassing districts such as Morang, Sunsari, Dhankuta, and Sankhuwasabha. Notably, the final 14-kilometer stretch between Chyamptang and Ghongghoppa, previously a challenging segment due to rugged topography, was completed by the Nepal Army in January 2025.
While the track is now open, efforts are underway to construct essential bridges and pave the roadway to ensure year-round accessibility. Once fully operational, the Koshi Highway is expected to serve as a vital trade route, reducing transportation costs and time between Nepal and its neighboring countries.
The government’s commitment to this project underscores its broader vision of transforming Nepal into a land-linked nation, leveraging its strategic position between two economic giants. By investing in such infrastructure, Nepal aims to unlock new economic opportunities, foster regional cooperation, and uplift the livelihoods of communities along the corridor.
